Should I or can I have a baby shower for a 2nd child? It is a question often asked.

The answer varies. Traditionally baby showers were held only for the first child. It was assumed that when having a second child, the parents already had all the large items necessary for the baby. Some will still say, absolutely not, only the 1st baby should have a baby shower.

However, nowadays more often than not, moms are having baby showers for 2nd, 3rd, even 4th or more babies. It’s not a matter of the gifts, it’s celebrating a new life. Of getting together with friends and family and having some fun.  I even know someone who has had 6 baby showers, so far :) , and no one has been upset or bothered to get together ONE MORE TIME to celebrate a new life!  Gifts??  Diapers, lotions, diaper rash cream, the stuff you go through every day.

I recently had that same question for myself. I have a boy, a girl, now I’m having my third, a boy. I have all the big items I need. I have plenty of clothes, shoes, etc. BUT I thought how about the party, and the pictures. Will the child ever wonder why he didn’t have a baby shower? Hard to tell but third children often dont have as many pictures, as many parties, as much of their own “stuff” as they get lots of hand-me-downs. All these thoughts coupled with the fact that my friends and family wanted to host the baby shower I figured – why not??

The second baby, especially if not of the same sex as the first will need clothes and accessories. There are also other situations.  Sometimes parents don’t expect another child and here’s their “surprise” baby – well they probably don’t have all they need so a gift shower is definitely welcome!

A common theme for a 2nd + baby shower is a “diaper” shower. What baby won’t need lots and lots of diapers? Decorate with diaper cakes, play the dirty diaper game. Give mom diapers in all sizes – it WILL be appreciated!
